Influenced by Taoism, Traditional Chinese Medicine incorporated the philosophical idea of the unity of opposites (yin and yang) in constant movement towards each other and applied it to the understanding of the energetic anatomy of the body.
As careful observers of nature, ancient Chinese people noticed the cyclic patterns of transformation. To explain the processes, functions and processes they had observed in nature, they devised a five-element theory, according to which wood, fire, water, metal and earth make up the tissue of the universe and their mutual relationships explain the constant waxes and wanes present in daily and seasonal cycles. They applied this theory to understand how energy flows determine the physiology of the body and the emotions we experience.
This class will explore how the five elements in nature are reflected in us. We will study these five elements, their characteristics, emotions associated to them and how they are aspects of Ki (or Qi). Also, how health is the result of unobstructed flow of energy through the body.
Massage therapists will be able to identify their own and their client’s Ki and their predominant element and using the concepts of mutual generation and mutual restriction cycles, will learn how to tailor their massage to the energetic needs of the client by using specific strokes that can sedate or stimulate the Ki. The result will be helping the body go back to a state of unobstructed flow of Ki.
The work, more than theory, will be based on intuition. We will use movement, rocking, percussion, pulling and contracting to experience the feeling of each element. We will “play” with yin and yang and the elements in the body to find ways to help the patient end the session relaxed, rejuvenated and grounded.
INSTRUCTOR:
Silvia Casabianca, LMT, Reiki Master and Medical QiGong Practitioner will teach this highly practical class.
The class will include how to apply the 5-element theory to self-care.
This is a mostly hands-on training with some theory.
